There are two types of tattoo machines, the shader and the liner. A shader is used for filling and coloring a tattoo and runs slower on the skin as it has to pass over the same area many times. A liner is used for making outlines of a tattoo. It is faster and delivers more of a punch. The two are separate machines and separate needles must be bought with them the shading and the lining needles. The more needles, the thicker line you will get. A little adjustment in the machine can make it work very well. Sometimes a device that guides you through the working of a machine proves very beneficial and for this you must be well acquainted with the springs in your liner and shader. Springs form an essential part of the machine and you must know the about different springs with varying weight, length and shapes. Then you must choose the one which suits you machine best because without them the machine won't work propely. For a shader you need a smoother and longer stroke to it. You can adjust the screw on the meter to adjust for how long the contact remains open. The machine will run faster if the contact remains open for a shorter time. This adjustment will prove perfect for liner however for a shader you must have the contacts open for a bit longer so that it runs slower. For a rule of thumb you can have the contact screw width should be that of a nickel for a liner and of a dime for a shader. So it is very important that you make sure that the contact screw is not worn out as it plays an important role in tattooing. The weight of the armature ball is also very critical to your job. As you need a slow run for shader, so have a softer and longer spring in the front so that they close and open slowly in the heavy armature bars and also have a softer and longer spring in the rear. The cycling time of your shader must lie between 75 to 85 hertz. A liner must run between 110 and 130 hertz. For a liner you need speed, and opposed to a shader you need to lighten the armature bars. So you have a heavier spring in the front for a faster opening and closing and a shorter spring in the rear so that it hits harder on the skin. You can adjust the duty cycle to 50% by monitoring it on the meter.
